An app can now help Nova Scotians deal with sexual harassment at work. The Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia released Safe at Work, a free web-based app to employers across the province. The app gives them resources for employees who have faced sexual harassment to help them deal with the situation. Safe at Work is produced in partnership with technology provider SimplyCast.

“Our goal is to help people in a safe and supportive way,” said Heather de Berdt Romilly, executive director at LISNS. “We’re known for our legal innovation in providing the public with access to justice.” With SimplyCast, LISNS can provide workplaces with unique trauma-informed help through Safe at Work using the best digital encryption software available.

Safe at Work gives users access to four types of help. Those looking for support can be matched with trusted help, referred to a lawyer for four hours of free legal support, or they can find healing through an art therapy session or sharing their story. Online bystander training is also available to help employees understand what harassment is, why it is harmful and how to prevent it at work.

“We are excited to partner with LISNS to assist them with providing this valuable service,” said Saeed El-Darahali, president and CEO of SimplyCast. “Sexual harassment in the workplace is a serious issue and SimplyCast is happy to provide technological assistance through our secure platform so victims can rest assured that their personal data always remains safe.”

Nova Scotia excludes sexual harassment from its Occupational Health and Safety Act. This puts the responsibility for dealing with sexual harassment on employers. Safe at Work is a cost-effective way to help employers improve the quality of their workplaces and protect their employees.

The Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia is a charitable organization in Halifax and has been the province’s trusted source for legal information since 1982. LISNS believes providing easy access to law information is fundamental to a fair justice system. Safe at Work is a part of a five-year sexual harassment in the workplace project funded by the Department of Justice Canada and in partnership with the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission.

SimplyCast is an ISO 27001, 27017, and 27018-certified, leading provider of engagement software for organizations in over 175 countries.
