Wednesday, June 20th, 2018 (Halifax, NS) – The Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia (LISNS) is honoured to be the co-recipient with McInnes Cooper of the 2018 IWK Board of Directors’ Award for Community Excellence, for our collaborative work on the IWK Family Legal Health Program.
The IWK Board Award of Community Excellence recognizes one or a group of community members who have made a distinct, significant and lasting contribution to the IWK Health Centre and to the achievement of its vision and mission. Nominees can be volunteers, community group, vendors and suppliers, members of the IWK Board of Directors, members of the IWK Auxiliary and the community at large.
This IWK Family Legal Health Progam is a Medical-Legal Partnership amongst the IWK Health Centre, LISNS and McInnes Cooper to deliver free legal services to qualifying patients and their families. There are similar Medical-Legal Partnerships in Ontario, facilitated by Pro Bono Ontario. The IWK Family Legal Health Program was launched in the Spring 2015, and since that time has helped over 65 patients and their families.
In partnership with the IWK Family Legal Health Program steering committee and IWK Social Work liaisons, LISNS performs a triage role, assessing needs, providing legal information, and making referrals to pro bono lawyers at McInnes Cooper or to other resources where appropriate.
The award was accepted on behalf of LISNS by Wendy Turner, Legal Information Services Manager.
