Nova Scotia's new mental health court opened on November 2, 2009, and held its first session on November 5 at the Dartmouth Provincial Court. The specialized court will focus on assisting individuals who have been charged with a criminal offence and who have a diagnosed mental illness. A mental health court team consisting of a defence lawyer, Crown Attorney, probation officer and two mental health professionals will provide ongoing support to program participants, and a Provincial Court Judge will oversee the proceedings. Visit the Nova Scotia Department of Justice website for more information.
