Special Guest Speaker on both days: Justice Harvey Brownstone of Ontario's Family Court, Author of Tug of War
Mr. Justice Harvey Brownstone became a
lawyer in 1983, and began his career working for Legal Aid as a full time Duty
Counsel in the Toronto
criminal courts.He then became Head of
the Family Law Section of the Legal Aid Research Facility, and in 1989 he
joined the Ministry of the Attorney General as legal counsel to the Support and
Custody Enforcement Program, which is now called the Family Responsibility
Office.He became Director of the
Program in 1991, and was appointed a provincial judge in 1995.For 15 years he has presided in the Toronto family court.
Justice Brownstone is the first and only
sitting family court judge in the world to write a national best selling book
that speaks directly to the public.His
book, Tug of War, which was released in February, was met with instant
accolades from within and outside legal circles, and went into second printing
even before it was officially launched.The book entered the national best seller list after only 6 weeks in
release, and so far has spent 11 weeks on the national best seller list.Tug of War is now in its 3rd
printing.Justice Brownstone has been
catapulted into the national media spotlight, and because he is the only judge
willing to do media interviews and public speaking engagements, he has become
not only the most famous judge in Canada, but the face and voice of Canada’s
family justice system.Tug of War has
been critically acclaimed throughout North America
and so far, has been nominated for five prestigious literary prizes.And all of Justice Brownstone’s royalties
from the sale of the book are being directed to the Children’s Wish Foundation.
