Welcome to
LISNS Online

A charitable not-for-profit organization, the Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia (or LISNS), has been providing Nova Scotians with information and resources about the law for more than 25 years.

LISNS’ staff and volunteers believe easy access to information about the law is fundamental to a fair justice system. Quite simply, it’s why and what we do.

Family Law Information Project for Abused Women

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT

On December 5, 2008 LISNS launched “Safely on Your Way: Child Custody and Access Information for Women Leaving Abusive Relationships and Their Service Providers”.  Safely on Your Way is an essential resource for women with children who are leaving an abusive relationship. It provides legal information for women in the post-separation stage who are trying to deal with custody and access issues, focusing on information women need to keep themselves and their children safe.

The publication was developed in partnership with the Transition House Association of Nova Scotia, the Women’s Innovative Justice Initiative and the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women, with funding from the Law Foundation of Nova Scotia, the IWK Health Foundation, Justice Canada, Status of Women Canada, NS Advisory Council on the Status of Women, and the NS Department of Justice.

Outstanding volunteer!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Dillon Trider has been volunteering on LISNS' Legal Information Line and Lawyer Referral Service since September 2007, as part of Dalhousie Law School's Pro Bono Students program. He has a B.A. in History & Political Science from McGill, and will be entering his final year of law school in September. While in Montreal Dillon volunteered with Project Genesis, which provides advocacy and referrals on a variety of legal issues aimed at community development in the Cote-des-Neiges area. At Project Genesis individuals can call or walk in and receive on-the-spot legal advice.

With his experience at Project Genesis under his belt, Dillon is a perfect fit for LISNS' Legal Information Line, and Dillon tells us that his time here has helped him acquire practical knowledge of legal issues, and to develop his legal skills. Dillon is a great squash player, plays guitar, and has his Black Belt in Kenpo. He is an accomplished landscaper, having worked with award winning companies in both Montreal and Halifax, and hopes to practice law in the Halifax Regional Municipality. He is currently working as a summer student at a local Halifax law firm, and we hope he'll be returning to volunteer at LISNS in September, as he is truly an absolutely outstanding volunteer!
