Welcome to LISNS Online A charitable not-for-profit organization, the Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia (or LISNS), has been providing Nova Scotians with information and resources about the law for more than 25 years. LISNS’ staff and volunteers believe easy access to information about the law is fundamental to a fair justice system. Quite simply, it’s why and what we do. An ideal volunteer!VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
In 2009, Michael Maynes returned from sunny Queensland, Australia to his hometown of Halifax. In Australia, he attended Bond University where he earned a Juris Doctor with a concentration on corporate and commercial law. He also undertook research on persons with mental and physical disabilities and their experiences in the workplace. He is now studying to qualify for the Nova Scotia Bar and plans to article in Nova Scotia.
Michael’s sense of humour and work ethic make him an ideal volunteer.
His volunteer work includes finalizing the pension Q & A pages for LISNS website and helping at the Divorce Fair and the Law-Di-Dah Dinner. We hope he will participate in LISNS Play in a Day Fundraiser in October.
Michael volunteers because he feels empathy for the many Nova Scotians that LISNS helps who can’t afford legal advice. “Dealing with legal issues can be very stressful”, he says, “lots of people just need a couple of questions answered to relieve their stress. LISNS is perfect for these people”.
He adds “While volunteering for LISNS, I have been able to meet interesting people and be exposed to new areas of law. I enjoy the social interaction and think volunteering is the best way for someone to understand the city they live in.”
